A magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck north of New Zealand overnight.
The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck at 1.19am, 11km northeast of L'Esperance Rock, 898km northeast of Whangarei, at a depth of 34km.
The tremor was followed by a magnitude 5.6 aftershock about 5.32am.
No tsunami advisory has been issued following the quakes.
