Quake, magnitude 5.3, hits near Wairoa

An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale struck the Hawke's Bay region today.

GNS Science said the quake hit 10km north-west of Wairoa at 1.23am at a depth of 40km.

It was felt widely in the Gisborne and Hawke's Bay regions, it said.
