An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale near the Kermadec Islands in the Pacific sent a quiver through the North Island today.
The quake was centred 180km southwest of Macauley Island, the second largest island in the Kermadec group, 1000km north of New Zealand.
It was at a depth of 520km.
GNS Science said the quake at 11.04am would have been lightly felt throughout the North Island.
