An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale struck the Southland area this morning.
GNS Science reported the quake struck at 5.43am, 100km west of Tuatapere, north-west of Invercargill, at a depth of 30km.
It may have been felt in Southland and southern Fiordland, it said.
