KEY POINTS:
An earthquake shook the lower southwest of the South Island just after noon today.
Measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale, the earthquake happened at 12.08pm, 80km southwest of Te Anau at a depth of 100km.
GNS Science said the quake would have been felt in Fiordland, Southland and Central Otago, but at only moderate intensity because of the 100km depth.
