KEY POINTS:
An earthquake measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale struck near Matata, 23km north-west of Whakatane, today.
GNS Science said today the quake occurred within 5km of Matata about 12.18pm, at a depth of 4km.
It might have been felt by the town's residents, it said.
