An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale has hit 50km north-west of Invercargill this morning.
The quake struck shortly after 11am and had a focal depth of 5km.
The quake was felt as far south as Stewart Island and as far north as Manapouri in Fiordland. It had been reported by 38 homes and businesses by 1.45pm.
