Parts of the upper South Island and lower North Island were shaken by an earthquake registering 5.9 on the Richter scale yesterday afternoon.
GNS Science said the earthquake at 4.29pm was centred 30km east of Murchison, 80km south-west of Nelson, at a depth of 100km.
The earthquake was felt in Wellington, Christchurch and Nelson.
