Twists and turns abounded in a new form of outdoor sports launched in Wairarapa on Friday.
More than 100 year 7 and 8 pupils from seven schools ran, cycled and kayaked in an "adventure race" that also included golf, tennis and mystery events.
Primary school teachers Jo Tatton and Belinda Bunny decided to spring their "Accele Rate adventure racing" concept on a wider audience after running a successful race at their Opaki School.
Pupils competed in 35 teams of three in the multidisciplinary
event, starting at Memorial Park and including on and around
Henley Lake.
The winners were three pupils from Masterton Intermediate School whose team was called TMNT.
Miss Tatton and Mrs Bunny next plan to run at least three Sunday events this year for older competitors.
First is a teenage event on October 18, followed by an adult "Where's Wally" team challenge on November 8 and an adult and child race on November 29.
Miss Tatton said the races were both a physical and a social event.
"You can still achieve it at a social level, but if you want to win you can go hard."
