Pumpkins join spuds in fundraiser

The judging for the annual Spud in a Bag fundraiser will be held in Carterton this weekend, and for the first time pumpkins have been included.

People received their spuds from October and judging will be held on Sunday at Carterton Memorial Club.

Paul Russell, of Carterton Lions Club, said it is a fun afternoon for everybody and organisers expected about a hundred entries.

There will also be spinning wheel raffles and spot prizes.

"It's a lot of fun, it's a great community thing," he said.

"It's something that we've been doing for quite a while."

This year they have also included a giant pumpkin growing competition.

"We're waiting to see what we'll get in the way of big pumpkins - that'll be interesting," he said.

People are to bring the vegetables to the club from 10am on Sunday and judging is to start at 12pm.

All funds raised go back into the community.
