Voting is open on the Christmas lighting that will decorate the Sky Tower from December 1 until January 9.
It is the first time the public has been asked to choose the landmark's colours.
SkyCity energy and environment co-ordinator Jonathan Woodbridge Buys said the new energy-efficient lighting installed on the tower this year enabled more dramatic displays.
"We are able to do sort of moving shows where we swirl light up and down and we can rapidly change the colours and create a shimmering, sparkling effect."
Mr Woodbridge Buys said the lights were controlled by computer.
There are four options to choose from: a green base with a red top, a blue base with a silver top and two more-elaborate displays - either a green base with red, silver and blue flashing spotlights (which will create a sparkling effect) or a red base with pulsing blue and silver rings that will be cascading up at the top of the tower.
People wanting to vote will need to spend more than $5 at a SkyCity restaurant or bar.
Votes will be counted and the winning design announced in two weeks.
