Enthusiasm for protecting urban trees is running ahead of calls to loosen chopping restrictions in comments on proposed district plan changes.
Auckland Council yesterday released summaries of public comments on 1800 trees on private property nominated for protection.
Further responses are being sought by May 14, ahead of hearings in June and July. Council commissioners' decisions will be issued in August.
A council spokesman said 750 new nominations across the region had been made. However, trees which did not make the list in December had missed the current round of plan changes.
People who nominated them would have to put in a submission for an amended list of trees, which would be part of the Unitary Plan next year.
