A man allegedly holding a fake gun was apparently foiled when members of the public overheard him talking about plans to rob a Manurewa bakery in Auckland.
The man was spotted standing outside the Homai Bakery & Superette on Gloucester Rd about 3pm on Tuesday, with what appeared to be a firearm in a tea towel, a police spokesman said.
Members of the public allegedly heard the man talking to another person about his plans to rob the shop.
They phoned police, and watched the man until officers arrived.
"Police units attended immediately and apprehended the man on the corner of Rowendale and Browns Rd," the spokesman said.
