Police say a New Zealander killed in a Perth bar at the weekend may have spoken to the wrong women.
Andy Marshall, a cousin of murdered Feilding farmer Scott Guy, died on Sunday night after he was thrown through a glass window and fell 7m.
Stefan Pahia Schmidt, a 25-year-old associate of Perth's Rock Machine bikie gang, has been charged with his murder. Schmidt appeared in court yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrate's Court on May 18.
Acting Detective Superintendent David Bryson told the West Australian newspaper that seconds before he was killed, Mr Marshall had been speaking to two women in the top-floor bar of the Ocean View Hotel.
Police said the women had also been talking to Schmidt, who allegedly grabbed Mr Marshall and threw him through the window.
Tim Porter was sitting on the veranda below the bar when Mr Marshall, the drummer for Perth band Rich Widow, fell to his death.
"I just saw him come straight through the window and land, literally, on his head," he said.
"I went to the bar first and grabbed some towels so I put them under his head ... The poor guy was lying on the floor, there were people trying to save him, people giving him CPR. It was actually not a very nice sight at all."
Mr Marshall was rushed to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in a critical condition, but later died from his injuries.
Police hope to carry out a post mortem examination on Mr Marshall today or tomorrow.
Mr Bryson said Schmidt had been drinking at the hotel with up to four Rock Machine members, including the gang's sergeant-at-arms, Brent Reker.
It is not clear if the women accompanied the gang members to the bar and police were yesterday appealing for them to come forward and tell officers what happened at the bar.
Mr Marshall is understood to have moved to Perth after separating from his wife. A friend described him as "lovely".
"He was a regular churchgoer, and an amazing drummer. Andy would have to be one of the kindest, gentlest blokes I've ever met,' the friend told the Herald.
Rich Widow lead vocalist Brayden Edwards paid tribute to Mr Marshall yesterday.
"He was one in a million, the nicest guy you could know," he wrote on the band's Facebook page.
"Andy was always a joy to be around. He made friends of everyone he came into contact with, and seemed incapable of making an enemy. He was always quick to see the lighter side of any situation and took on any challenge with enthusiasm and his unforgettable smile."
He said Mr Marshall's death was a shock to everyone who knew him.
"He seemed like the least likely and least deserving person to bear the brunt of such senseless aggression and violence.
"Today we lost a brilliant drummer, an inspiring character and a close friend."
Mr Guy's sister Nikki told the Manawatu Standard her cousin's death was tragic.
"It's a pretty difficult time for us all again."
Another of Mr Marshall's cousins, who did not want to be named, went to the Ocean Beach Hotel on Monday. She cried as she described him as someone who was always laughing.
"He was the kind of person you need more of in the world," she told the West Australian.
She was not sure if Mr Marshall's parents, brother or sister would travel to Perth.
