Psychiatric assessment for stabbing accused

A man accused of a fatal stabbing in West Auckland two weeks ago has been remanded to the Mason Clinic for psychiatric assessment.

A bedside hearing at Auckland Hospital was held this morning for the 31-year-old. He was shot by police during the incident in Henderson that left another man dead and two others injured.

The man is expected to appear in court on December 23.

He was hit by three police bullets during the incident in which 65-year-old Kevan Newman was killed.
