A taxi driver who led a strike in protest at a Rugby World Cup levy on drivers has been sacked.
Allaudin Kabani, 62, the spokesman for 20 drivers for Auckland's Cheap Cabs who went on strike against the levy on Thursday, was told by owner Carol Ramsay yesterday that he had to stop working for the company immediately.
He asked for a letter in writing but has not yet received it. He plans to complain to the Labour Department, but Auckland employment lawyer Eska Hartdegen said previous cases had found taxi drivers were independent contractors with no protection under employment law.
Ms Ramsay did not return the Weekend Herald's call yesterday.
