Trees at 190 places in urban areas of Waitakere have been added to the 100 already protected there by the Auckland District Plan.
In a reserved decision, independent commissioners Les Simmons (chairman), Cherie Lane and Rebecca Skidmore said they considered 240 proposals for the heritage tree schedule and removed 52 individual or groups of unworthy trees in response to submissions heard last August.
The panel said once a tree was scheduled it could not be removed without a resource consent.
Trees on the ridges, gullies and steep slopes in the Titirangi-Laingholm area added to the national significance of the Waitakere Ranges.
About 390 trees were put forward by the Waitakere Local Board for the test by arborists' ratings and property owners' objections.
