The Wairarapa-Bush Rugby Union won't be making a handsome profit on its workings for the 2007 season.
Chief executive officer Phil Taylor said yesterday the full financial picture wouldn't be clear for a week or two yet but circumstances had dictated the situation was not as rosy as it was this time last year.
Those circumstances included the Wairarapa-Bush union not hosting a Heartland semi-final match as they had in 2006.
"Obviously semi-finals and finals bring in big crowds and help the coffers," Taylor said.
"They are the icing on the cake and we didn't quite manage to achieve that this time."
Taylor said it was a fact of life that most unions were under more pressure these days from a financial viewpoint and Wairarapa-Bush were no exception in that regard.
"You can't survive on gate takings, it's much more about sponsorship and fund raising and there's a lot of competition in that area," he said.
Taylor said it was likely too that because of a new funding policy the next annual contribution received by Wairarapa-Bush from the Hurricanes Super 14 franchise was likely to be halved.
It was usually around the $80,000 mark and would very probably drop to about $40,000 next time.
Profit will be down, says Taylor
