KEY POINTS:
The former gynaecologist who botched sterilisations on six Wanganui women and is suspected of having an alcohol problem may be seeking work in Queensland.
The Queensland Medical Board (QMB) yesterday confirmed Roman Hasil successfully registered to practise in the state as recently as October 19.
Dr Hasil is being investigated by the Health and Disability Commission in New Zealand, after six of the 32 women Dr Hasil performed sterilisation operations on became pregnant.
He was employed at Wanganui Hospital between August 2005 and October 2006 before going on sick leave.
He resigned on March 6 after the failed surgeries came to light.
During his time at the hospital, the Czech gynaecologist was the subject of at least seven alcohol-related complaints and other complaints from patients about his manner and treatment of them.
QMB project manager Glen Weller told the Wanganui Chronicle Dr Hasil had recently applied for registration in Queensland under a mutual recognition agreement based on his prior registration in New South Wales.
The New South Wales Medical Board register shows Dr Hasil was first registered there in 2001 and his present certificate expires on February 25 next year.
Mr Weller said that the mutual recognition process did not require a doctor to have a job in Queensland prior to registration.
While the QMB registration certificate did not show whether Dr Hasil had a current job, the fact he had registered probably indicated that he intended to work, he said.
He could not confirm whether any Certificate of Good Standing, the equivalent of a licensing "warrant of fitness" for doctors, had been received for Dr Hasil.
An earlier QMB register showed Dr Hasil was registered in Queensland between November 11, 2006, and June 30, 2007, the date by which all Queensland registrations must be renewed.
If Dr Hasil's registration had expired, he would have had to go through the whole registration process again, Mr Weller said.
New South Wales Medical Board spokeswoman Edwina Light said the board was aware Dr Hasil was under investigation, but would make no decisions regarding his present registration status until the HDC report was released.
Ms Light said as far as the board knew, Dr Hasil had not been practising in New South Wales.
The Medical Council of New Zealand confirmed it had not issued Dr Hasil with a Certificate of Good Standing or even been asked for one.
Dr Hasil was ineligible as he was under investigation by the HDC in relation to his fitness to practice.
