Probe into council cash discrepancy

A complaint to police is likely to be made in the next few days in relation to financial discrepancies involving former Masterton District Council accountant John Wynne.

The Wairarapa Times-Age last year reported that the council was looking into the financial discrepancies, understood to involve just over $10,000.

Mr Wynne resigned from the council in August last year and is now living in Australia's Northern Territory.

Council chief executive Wes ten Hove refused to confirm how much money was involved and repeated his comments to the Times-Age in December that there were no outstanding funds related to the matter.

He said a council investigation launched part way through last year had been completed and a complaint to police is only days away.

"I expect to report to police in the next two to three working days," Mr ten Hove said.

"I'm not prepared to say how much money was involved before going to police and they have to make up their minds about what they'll do."

Mr Wynne, who resigned as revenue accountant after six years in the role, had been called in Australia and questioned by council staff, Mr ten Hove said.

He refused to confirm whether Mr Wynne had paid back any funds, although he said that after council discussions with him, "there had been nothing outstanding".

"We have had communication with Mr Wynne seeking explanations. People can make honest mistakes, so there are discrepancies that were explainable. What couldn't be explained will be the matters police will consider."

Mr Wynne could not be reached for comment.
