The number of full-time-equivalent students at private schools rose by 27.2 per cent in the past decade to almost 31,000.
The Ministry of Education's March roll returns showed 17.9 per cent growth at state integrated schools between 1999 and this year and a 2.1 per cent rise at state schools.
The number of school students grew by 4.5 per cent in the period.
