Prisoners will no longer be able to store large amounts of personal belongings while they are doing time thanks to a corrections department clampdown.
While the department has traditionally stored items like large carvings and paintings, they no longer have the space and the resources to continue, Radio New Zealand reported today.
Corrections Minister Anne Tolley said the storage of inmates' property was a problem and the department was not in the storage business.
"Anything from clothing to personal possessions that they had on them when they were arrested or went into court, there's some bizarre things I understand," she told Radio New Zealand.
"All sorts of personal possessions that people think they can take into prison but actually they can't."
