A prisoner has won the right to have kosher food, including beef noodles, Ribena and protein powder, delivered to his cell, after taking his case to the Human Rights Review Tribunal.
Wayne Jury Eaglesome, a prisoner at Auckland Regional Prison, sought an interim order requiring the Department of Corrections to adhere to an agreement, which would see him provided with food which conformed to his kosher diet, a judgement released by the tribunal said.
Eaglesome said if the interim order was not granted he would be forced to eat non-kosher meals and food, which would have a significant impact on his psychological welfare.
The Department of Corrections originally disputed Eaglesome's request, the judgement said.
However, both parties have since reached an agreement, and the Department of Corrections has agreed to purchase and provide specified food to Eaglesome.
