A man has lost the ends of two fingers in an automatic door at Rotorua's brand new police cells.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has confirmed it is investigating the incident, which happened in February.
The man was a prisoner in the $14.5 million Rotorua Police Custodial Facility when the accident occurred, Rotorua's Daily Post reported today.
Rotorua police area commander Inspector Bruce Horne would not comment while the incident was being investigated.
The facility is a state-of-the-art cell block, which operates on a keyless system with automatic doors and unbreakable glass.
It is the first of its kind in New Zealand and was opened in July last year.
