A Porirua pāua poacher has been sent to prison in a sentencing that's hoped to send a strong message that stealing from fisheries will not be tolerated.
Ruteru Sufia, 56, was sentenced to an 18 month prison term in the Porirua District Court today, after he was caught two times in as many days taking pāua.
He previously pleaded guilty to illegally taking 366 pāua from Makara beach, 70 of which were undersized. The daily limit in the area is 10 per person and the minimum legal size is 125mm.
MPI Fishery officers caught Sufia when he was walking back to his car with 145 shucked pāua in his backpack. He was caught in the same place the next day after returning to pick up the remaining 221.
MPI team manager of fisheries for the eastern and lower North Island Mike Green said it was extremely disappointing to see this level of offending.
