Two prison officers received special commendation awards today for saving the life of a prisoner who tried to harm himself and set his cell on fire.
Corrections department chief executive Barry Matthews said David Mears and James Spellman displayed courage, skill and professionalism during the incident at Waikeria Prison in Waikato.
"Officers Mears and Spellman took immediate action to assist the prisoner and extinguish the fire," Mr Matthews said.
"I have no doubt that because of their professional conduct and timely actions the prisoner's life was saved and the fire damage was limited.
"Through this act of distinction David and James displayed skill that has earned them respect across the department."
Mr Matthews said staff were trained to deal with such incidents. However the actions of the two officers was above and beyond the call of duty.
"They are truly a credit to the department."
