One of two prison staff attacked yesterday by two teenage inmates in Hawke's Bay Regional Prison's youth unit remained in hospital today.
While battered and bruised, the staff had indicated they were keen to get back to work, Department of Corrections chief executive Ray Smith said.
Two 17-year-old male inmates attacked the officers while they were carrying out their normal duties about midday yesterday.
"The situation was managed extremely well, and extremely quickly by staff," Mr Smith said.
The department would not tolerate attacks on staff, he said.
"We are appalled by this behaviour and the prisoners involved will be held to account for their actions."
The two prisoners were still at the site today, but it was likely that they would be moved.
They would face internal misconduct charges and if found guilty would face a range of disciplinary actions/sanctions including cell confinement and loss of privileges, Mr Smith said.
"Disciplinary action can be taken in addition to a prisoner having their security classification reviewed, which can result in them being moved to another prison site," Mr Smith said.
External charges may also be laid by police.
