A prison guard bashed by an inmate at Waikeria Prison suffered a broken nose and three fractures to his eye socket.
The guard was attacked from behind and repeatedly kicked in the head before the inmate was dragged off him by two other staff on Monday, Corrections Association president Beven Hanlon told the Weekend Herald. The south Waikato prison's manager Kevin Smith said first aid was administered to the officer, before he was taken to hospital for treatment of eye and nose injuries.
"He was released later that night to go home. He'll remain at home until he has completely recovered and is fit to work again."
Mr Smith said the prisoner's security classification was being reviewed as a result of the attack.
"Prisoners can be volatile and unpredictable and many have long histories of antisocial behaviour," he said.
