KEY POINTS:
A post-mortem examination of a prisoner who died in Wanganui's Kaitoke Prison was underway tonight but police say they may not make any findings public.
James Koteraki Kahu, 36, died in the prison's nursery compound yesterday morning.
Police said yesterday circumstances surrounding Kahu's death meant an investigation into the events leading up to it had begun.
Police were speaking with witnesses, including inmates and staff.
A police spokesperson said the post-mortem examination on Kahu began at 3pm today and was not expected to be completed until tonight.
"Depending on the findings, the result may not be made public."
A scene examination which started this morning was still being conducted.
Witnesses interviews were not expected to be completed until tomorrow or early Saturday morning.
