KEY POINTS:
Following a printing error at Inland Revenue, a number of people have received student loan statements which wrongly indicate their interest has not been wiped.
A New Plymouth man had just finished paying off his $27,000 loan when a statement arrived indicating that the last of his interest had not been written off, the Taranaki Daily News reported today.
Interest write-offs for students loans were introduced as a Labour Party platform shortly before the last election.
When the man, who did not want to be named, rang IRD they told him the mistake was due to a "printing glitch" and that a lot of people were affected.
An IRD spokeswoman said the error would not affect the real status of people's loans, and everyone entitled to an interest write-off had received one.
"None of the accounts are incorrect, so nobody needs to worry. We'll put out corrected statements within the next couple of weeks."
The spokeswoman did not know what caused the printing problem.
