Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is marking the anniversary of the deadly Kaikoura quake with a fresh commitment to seeing communities rebuilt and pledging support for the long haul.
Speaking from Manila where she is attending the 50th Asean Summit, Ardern sent her thoughts and support to residents of Kaikoura, Hurunui and Marlborough gathering today to mark the anniversary of the destructive quake that had a catastrophic impact across the top of the South Island.
"While I can't be in Kaikoura in person for the opening of the harbour and the community picnic, my thoughts are with local people as they mark this important milestone in the recovery journey," said Ardern.
"I want local people to know that this Government will be with them for the long haul. We will continue to support the recovery - both through our commitment to completing the existing programme and by working closely with communities, organisations and sectors affected to ensure that anything that's not quite there yet can be addressed."
She praised the community for showing "huge strength" in extreme circumstances.
