Tony Price took the limelight when the third race in the Trust House Masterton harriers summer series was held at Taueru last Sunday.

In cool weather conditions, the runners had the luxury of a gusty westerly wind behind them over the latter stages and were also lucky to escape a hail storm that arrived soon after the event finished.

All told, 69 runners and walkers took part.

The 7km course had a significant off-road component, traversing reasonably dry tracks on farmland made available by Tom Lett, who also assisted with the organisational duties.

Price, who has been competing successfully on the track and road at national Masters level all year, showed his strength by winning the A grade race in 26min 46s. He had 12 seconds to spare from Michael Macklin.

The best handicap time in the A grade went to Lloyd Millar.

He also leads the handicap aggregate.

The C grade section is providing the keenest battle for the handicap aggregate prize, with three runners within one point of each other. Richard Hawkes has a slender lead.

The walkers' section was won by Ali Lang, with Beth Davenport taking handicap honours on the day and Cath Wedderburn leading the aggregate.
