Parents are being encouraged to spend more time in the water with their children when taking them for a swim in an effort to cut preschooler drownings.
Water Safety New Zealand says 101 infant and preschool children have drowned in the past 10 years, about 10 per cent of the total drowning toll.
It said 73 per cent of those 101 deaths happened in a domestic setting.
Home swimming pools were the greatest causes of death by drowning for preschoolers, followed by public swimming pools.
