A Matamata woman killed by her millionaire husband was forced to sign a pre-nup.
The detail has been revealed by David White, 67, who is raising the child born to his daughter Helen and Greg Meads, who killed her.
Meads was sentenced to 11 years in prison on March 31. White has launched a campaign to pressure the Solicitor General to appeal for a longer sentence.
An appeal must be lodged within 28 working days of the sentence.
White told the Herald on Sunday he wanted a longer sentence in part to protect his granddaughter, 10, from Meads' influence when he was released.
He hoped she would be in her mid-20s when he was released and more able to handle any contact.
White and wife Pam are raising Samantha with no assistance from Meads - who has an estimated $40 million fortune - or his wealthy parents, he said.
He said much of Meads' behaviour was tied up in the control he could have with his fortune - that included a pre-nuptial agreement which meant Helen's death left nothing of the Meads' fortune for Samantha to inherit.
He said it left him and Pam collecting the unsupported child's benefit.
"I fail to accept every taxpayer in this country has to pay for his children's benefit when they [Meads' family] can afford to do it themselves. It's not about us getting any more money - it's about them taking responsibility. What sort of grandparents are they?"
Meads' parents did not return messages.
