Powerco is committed to safety of the public and really all we are asking is that people take it easy on the roads this summer.Phil Marsh Powerco is urging Kiwi drivers to buck the trend and avoid knocking over any power poles during the summer holiday break.
Powerco network operations manager Phil Marsh said since April 1 erring motorists had knocked over 83 power poles and in the process injured themselves, their passengers, damaged or destroyed their vehicles, cut power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses and in many cases incurred significant repair costs.
Nine of those were in Wairarapa.
"Powerco is committed to safety of the public and really all we are asking is that people take it easy on the roads this summer, there will be a lot of traffic and delays and we just want to remind people to take their time and stay on the roads."
On average two poles a week are hit on Powerco's network and Mr Marsh said it wanted to issue a challenge to drivers to avoid hitting poles over the summer break.
