Power has been restored to the earthquake-devastated Christchurch city centre.
Orion said electricity was back on in parts of the city's "red zone", but warned it would continue to be "problematic" for months amid ongoing demolition work.
Civil Defence regularly requests power to be disconnected from unsafe buildings on short notice, its statement said.
"As we carry out this work, residents with power need to be aware that further power cuts in the wider CBD are likely."
Orion urged those doing digging or demolition work in the "red zone" to treat all exposed cables as live.
