Wellington Electricity says power has been restored to most homes cut off after the storm that hit the capital on June 20.
A small number of people were still on generators because safe permanent connections were still being worked on and some customers who reported outages couldn't be contacted, the company said.
Some vacant homes were also still without power because safety checks could not be carried out.
Repair crews had worked non-stop since the storm and more than 150 additional reinforcements were brought in from as far away as Hamilton, Thames, Whangarei, Tauranga, Hastings and Marlborough, almost tripling the workforce.
The repair crews had found that the damage done to the electricity network was far worse than originally expected, the company said.
