Given the dangerous manner of driving, police engaged in a short pursuit, the statement said.
A short time later, a vehicle crashed into a power pole at the Marine Parade and Tweed St roundabout.
The intersection was closed due to powerlines across the road.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody at the scene and had minor to moderate injuries.
No members of the public were injured as a result of the incident.
Inquiries into the incident remain ongoing.
Powerco said in a statement 835 customers experienced a power outage yesterday evening after a vehicle collided with a power pole near the roundabout on the corner of Ocean Beach, Marine Parade and Tweed Sts in Mount Maunganui.
“Power went out at 8pm after the accident brought down lines as well isolating link equipment mounted on the top of a pole. A field crew was dispatched to make the site safe and to carry out the repairs, which included replacing several poles,” the statement said.
“Most customers were progressively restored over the course of the evening using backfeeding, however 281 customers remained off overnight due to the incident.
“The final 281 customers were reconnected at 6:45am this morning.”
