Lines company Wellington Electricity says power has now been restored to about 4000 customers after a contractor hit an underground cable while digging.
A contractor hit an underground 11kV feeder about 8.30am while preparing the area for electrical work over the weekend on Adelaide Rd, cutting power to "a fairly large area" around the central suburb of Mt Cook, including the CBD.
Power was fully restored to the affected network at 12.35pm, Wellington Electricity spokesman Ryan Auger said.
The company appreciated people had been without power for up to four hours but it also had to consider safety and equipment needed to be checked for damage before power could be fully restored, he said.
