Potential stabbing leaves man in serious condition in Lower Hutt

An elderly couple living near where a man was found with stab wounds in Lower Hutt this morning have found blood smeared across their car.

The couple, who don't want to be named, said their front gate was still locked this morning when they went out to where their car was parked in the carport, found blood smeared across the roof and boot of the vehicle.

They have lived in the area for 50 years and said nothing shocked them anymore.

"It's just a bit of watered-down blood," the man said.

The woman said it was a "pretty good area to live in," but the occasional incident would happen. "It didn't always used to be like this around here."

She said she wished people would leave other people's property alone.

They have not spoken to police and know nothing about the stabbing.

Police are investigating after a man was found with what is believed to be a stab wound to his abdomen in Waiwhetu, Lower Hutt, this morning.

Police have cordoned off a block of living units at 148 Randwick Cres, where residents say the victim lives.

"He's a lovely guy," one man said. "Quiet as."

Others said the victim would always wave to them when he saw them. One called him a "gentle giant". "He wouldn't hurt a bloody fly."

People in forensic gear can be seen scouring the apartment block, taking photos and looking through a black ute at the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Todd said the man was found by a member of the public near the railway tracks by Awamutu Gr just after 8am.

The man was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition.
