KEY POINTS:
An Auckland Post Office has been closed after white powder was found leaking from an international parcel.
New Zealand Post's Dominion Road Delivery Branch in Mt Eden will be closed for the rest of today while the premises are cleaned.
Mail delivery to Point Chevalier, Kingsland and Eden Terrace will be suspended today but will resume tomorrow.
Nine postal workers have had to undergo a decontamination process after one worker came into contact with the powder. They are now resting at home.
Auckland Delivery Leader Rowena O'Neil says the postal worker who discovered the leaking substance followed the correct procedure and alerted emergency services promptly.
Police and Fire Services attended the scene and immediately cordoned off the area.
Ms O'Neil says police advised closing the premises as a precautionary measure. The unidentified substance has been sent for analysis.
"It's very reassuring to know correct emergency procedures were followed and that the workers were fully in control of the situation."
Ms O'Neil says the closure is unfortunate.
"We have to follow correct procedure so we have to have the place thoroughly cleaned which, unfortunately, means suspension of mail delivery for one day."
