KEY POINTS:
A post mortem examination will be carried out today on a woman found dead in a wardrobe in a Lower Hutt flat on Sunday.
Police said the last confirmed sighting of the 48-year-old woman, whose name is yet to be released, was on June 19.
It was possible her body had been in the flat for weeks.
Meanwhile, a 43-year-old man appeared in Wellington District Court yesterday charged with assaulting the woman and police said further charges were likely.
Investigation head Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Levy told Radio New Zealand the woman was found in a wardrobe wrapped in a blanket.
He said police had received information there was a body in the flat and that was confirmed when they went there on Sunday night.
"At this stage we are not revealing the source of that information," Mr Levy said.
He confirmed there was a relationship between the woman and the man who appeared in court but was not certain as to the extent of it.
Mr Levy said police were trying to establish the date of the death and exactly how it occurred.
"At this stage we're not looking for anyone else in relation to this, however that doesn't mean to say other people weren't involved, we have just yet to establish exactly what happened."
The man charged with assault was granted name suppression and remains in custody until July 31 when he is due to appear again in Wellington District Court.
