A number of bank robberies in South Auckland in just over a week have led police to question if a serial burglar is responsible.
In three separate incidents an unarmed man has entered a bank demanding cash from staff.
The most recent robbery happened midday yesterday at the BNZ's Manukau branch. Another took place the preceding day at Kiwi Bank in Otara and at ASB's Botany Junction branch on Monday August 31.
Because of the behaviour of the burglar it was possible the robberies were linked, a police spokesperson said - although this could not be confirmed at this stage.
A BNZ spokeswoman said there were nine staff and one customer at the branch when the man came in.
Staff responded appropriately, she said, and she was confident the bank's security systems were robust.
"I'm sure it was not their best day at work," she said. "We have offered them counselling if they need it."
A spokesperson for New Zealand Post, which is responsible for the Otara Post Shop Kiwi Bank branch, says its team handled the incident calmly.
"We will continue to support the team in Otara in the aftermath of this incident."
An ASB spokeswoman says it too was offering its staff support.
She says the bank is always looking at the risk posed to its branches.
"We are cooperating closely with the police in regard to this specific incident."
Counties Manukau Police are concerned about the number of incidents and are asking members of the public who might have information to call 0508 422 443, or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Police have also issued a reminder to be alert to any suspicious activity and even if it seems minor to call 111.
"If a robbery or theft does occur staff should be reminded to be observant, but behave in a non-threatening manner and to do their best to ensure any customers do not attempt to intervene or cause the offenders to be threatened."
