The Wairarapa development squad men's soccer team showed the value of protecting possession in their 6-1 Wairarapa championship win over Wairarapa College on Sunday.
Co-coach Phil Keinzley said the emphasis had been on retaining the ball for long periods and while the largely-inexperienced Wairarapa United side did not always achieve that objective they made a big improvement on previous games.
"You can get away with regularly playing the long ball in local league but if our players want to succeed at a higher level then they have to treat possession as vital," Keinzley said. "Just kicking and hoping that a team-mate will get on the end of it isn't good enough."
Kuranui College student Andrew Fauvel, playing at fullback, had an outstanding match for Wairarapa United as did Paolo Frisone who scored three of their goals. Other goal scorers were Allan Wellbrock (2) and Jamie Coleman.
The previous weekend had seen the Wairarapa United side go down 5-4 to competition favourites Masterton Athletic. It was a good effort considering Wairarapa United were without Paolo Frisone and another couple of first choice players as well.
