KEY POINTS:
The 45-year path of evolution for the Porsche 911 continues later this year with the introduction of a revised model line.
Yes, it still looks the same - new lights front and rear are about the limit of the styling changes.
But the 911 now has direct-injection technology for its 3.6 and 3.8-litre engines and the option of a Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) double-clutch transmission.
The new technologies - both familiar from the Volkswagen Group - help the 911 go faster but also use less fuel, with the entry 3.6-litre engine improved by 15 per cent to 225g/km in the Combined cycle.
The maximum output of the Carrera 3.6-litre is up to 254kW, while the Carrera S' 3.8-litre has risen to 283kW.
With this extra power, the Carrera S offers a top speed of slightly more than 300km/h.
The new PDK gearbox has seven forward speeds and replaces the Tiptronic-automatic option previously offered.
The PDK shifts gears up to 60 per cent faster than a conventional automatic transmission.
The Carrera S accelerates to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds - 0.2 seconds faster than the manual version and 0.8 seconds quicker than the previous automatic model.
PDK can also be combined with launch control as part of the option Sport Chrono Package Plus.
