The Rimutaka Cycle Trail is set to receive a $230,000 funding boost.
Wellington Regional Economic Development Agency will receive $229,600 from The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to invest in the popular trail.
The trail is one of 23 Great Rides on the New Zealand Cycle Trail and was recently named one of the hottest new visitor attractions in the world by the Lonely Planet travel guide.
It starts at Petone, runs north along the Hutt River Trail, climbs over the Rimutaka Rail Trail and loops back through South Wairarapa and around to Wainuiomata Coast Rd. Hutt City Council manager for parks and gardens Bruce Hodgins said the money would be used to widen and improve the trail over several sections.
"This funding boost is for work throughout the Hutt Valley, with almost three quarters earmarked to Petone Foreshore enhancements to create a better shared pathway for cyclists and other recreational users. "This will complement significant work already undertaken on the trail including re-surfacing, campsite improvements, and a new carpark at Orongorongo River."
