Popcorn machine fire closes Rotorua movie theatre

A faulty popcorn machine has left Rotorua's movie theatre soaked and closed until at least this evening.

While preparing the popcorn this morning, a fault in the machine saw it catch fire.

The sprinklers then got into work dousing the area around the candy bar, leaving the carpet soaked.

Readings Rotorua Manager Adam Morrison said they were hopeful disruptions will be minimal.

He says they will be cleaning for the next few hours to try and reopen in time for the evening session.
