British-based pop singer Daniel Bedingfield was not breaching his learner's licence conditions when he crashed his car in New Zealand earlier this month, police say.
The 24-year-old was lucky to escape brain injury or paralysis when the 4WD vehicle he was driving rolled on Kauri Mountain Rd, near Whangarei, on January 2.
Whangarei police Sergeant Andy Thomson said although Bedingfield had a New Zealand learner driver's licence, his male passenger was carrying a full overseas licence.
"That person is deemed to be the supervisor."
The passenger escaped without injury, but Bedingfield fractured two vertebra in the crash.
Police are waiting for a crash analysis and a report on the status of the vehicle before making a decision on possible charges.
Bedingfield held an "I'm not dead" party on Wednesday to celebrate his lucky escape.
