Poor finishing cost Wairarapa United dearly in their central league football match with Maycenvale United in Hastings on Sunday.
The 1-1 scoreline meant the two teams shared the points but a frustrated Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley said his side should probably have been five or six goals up by halftime.
"Hell, I'd hate to think how many one-on-ones we had which should have produced goals but didn't," he said. "We were all over them, the finishing was so bad we wouldn't have scored in a brothel."
Even allowing for their deficiencies in the scoring department, Wairarapa United still went to the halftime break with a 1-0 advantage, Nathan Cooksley having netted from a corner, but, unfortunately, their second-half effort wasn't a great deal better than their first.
"We did improve the structure a bit but overall it was still not good enough, again we had plenty of chances to score and didn't take them. It got pretty embarrassing really". To make matters worse the only goal of the second spell was scored by a Maycenvale United team whose own confidence grew as Wairarapa United constantly failed to make the most of their scoring opportunities, and there was good cause to suspect it came from an offside position. "Maybe they [Maycenvale United] got what they deserved, at least they hung in here," Keinzley said.
Midfielders Nyobishi Ishi and Adam Cowan and defenders Waisake Sabatu and Cooksley were the pick of a Wairarapa United side which has now dropped from second to third on the central league points table.
They have 16 points, behind Miramar Rangers 19 and Olympic 17 and ahead of Western Suburbs 15, Lower Hutt City and Napier City Rovers 12, Tawa 11, Petone 9, Maycenvale United 8 and Palmerston North Marist 6.
Wairarapa United will play a double-header against Lower Hutt City over Queen's Birthday weekend. Both games will be away with Saturday's game counting towards the central league and Monday's being a Chatham Cup knockout match.
