KEY POINTS:
The view's lovely and the fresh air's free but to enjoy it with a modicum of comfort, and a clear conscience, is now $5 in Mt Cook National Park with portable poo pots going on sale.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) had been handing out the poo pots on a free trial over the last two years.
But now the pots would be sold for $5, DOC spokeswoman Shirley Slatter said.
The one litre pots come with five biodegradable cornstarch bags, and an instruction leaflet with a chocolate fish being photographed in prime position in a bag.
"Human waste breaks down a lot slower than people think," Ms Slatter said.
"They cannot just leave waste in crevasses, under snow or rocks any more. The snow melts and there it is again the next season."
